The standard way of sharing the ArcGIS Pro layer to the Web (ArcGIS Online) has been discussed here. This method is quick, although it doesn’t cover the details of the given layer, which might be needed later in the Online-based work. The way of sharing presented there doesn’t cover the elements like:
– enabled attachments
– categorized style
– editable layer
– the correct location of the layer
– layer synchronization
These are needed for correct work later in ArcGIS Online, especially affiliated applications like Field Maps Designer. This text explains how to equip the shared layer with all the mentioned elements.
The very first step should be running the Enable Attachments script. In this case, we must go to the Main bar -> Analysis -> Tools -> Enable Attachments. Select the layer you want to share when the simple interface is opened, and click the Run button. It should be fine, but sometimes, you might get an alert warning that the attachments have already been enabled for this layer (Pic. 1).
The style section is widely discussed in this text. Let’s assume that our layer is ready to go. Once the Share As Web Layer option is selected, we must take a look at some crucial things (Pic. 2).
At the first tab (1), we can specify the folder and make the layer shared to defined groups, people, etc. It’s not mandatory. However, if you want to have everything tidy and well organized, it is vital to do it at this moment. The second tab includes two types of layers. Whereas the WFS layer isn’t needed, especially since it would have to be shared with everyone, the Feature layer is the one we need to set up before sent to the Online portal. By clicking on the pen icon on the right (2) we can expand the setting options. There are default settings, which unfortunately don’t cover the stuff listed at the beginning of this text. The options bound in red rectangle (3) must be turned on. Now our shared layer will:
– have attachments enabled
– be editable by the users
– be able to sync with the offline progress (in default understanding the Sync option turned on)
All the settings made in ArcGIS Pro are clearly reflected in ArcGIS Online as an output (Pic. 3).
All the options must be adjustable to your needs. This article explains one of the way of how you should setup your layer correctly and aviod an additional hassle later in ArcGIS Online.
